'The Brokenwood Mysteries' Season 5, TV Review

Previous reviews: Series 1, Series 2, Series 3, Series 4.

Includes episodes "Scared to Death," "Bride Not to Be," "Tontine," and "The Dark Angel." Each 90 minutes in length. The last one, and the last I'm likely to watch for a long time (as I have the disks for seasons 1 to 5 only). The last episode holds a rather unusual distinction: it's the only time I've guessed the murderer about half way through the episode (instead of not at all). As such, I thought it was a bit disappointing. The season as a whole was good, like the previous ones.

Small breakdowns of logic happen regularly. For example, Jared Morehu (Pana Hema Taylor) had disappeared for the entirety of season 4 and has now resurfaced. Mike Shepherd (Neill Rea) asks him where he's been. Last we heard, Jared was tending the vines on Mike's property - basically he was an employee of Mike's. He wouldn't have vanished for a year without at least saying something. But this way we - the audience - get to hear Jared explain his absence.

I'm also somewhat amused by Frankie Oades aka "Frodo" (played by Karl Willetts). He's kind of the series mascot. He showed up in the fourth episode of the first season, and has appeared in about half the episodes since. He's kind of incompetent, and is always trying a new form of employment in the hope that it'll work out better than his last one. He also has an uncanny knack for being at the scene of a crime, and is often a witness and occasionally a suspect.
